The feng shui money frog—also known as the three-legged toad or money toad—has deep symbolic roots. It is a mythological creature with three legs that is said to attract wealth and abundance. A money frog can be placed in several locations, but there are a few general rules to follow to enjoy the full benefits of this spiritual symbol.
Lore of the Money Frog
The symbolism of the money frog comes from Chinese folklore. According to one legend, a wife of one of the eight immortals who was greedy and craved riches, stole the elixir of immortality and drank it. As punishment, she was turned into a toad with the tail of a tadpole instead of two hind legs and banished to the moon. In another version of the story, her incensed husband shot her with an arrow, causing her to lose a leg.
In a related legend, one of the immortals lured the toad out of hiding with gold coins, knowing its fondness for wealth. The toad is said to be so greedy that money actually sticks to it as it travels the heavens, which it then brings to you if you display one in your home or office. Consequently, the three-legged toad is often depicted surrounded by money or with a coin in its mouth.
Furthermore, frogs and toads are found around water, and in feng shui, water is symbolic of wealth. Together, these legends and associations have turned the money frog into a magnet for wealth and good fortune.
Positioning a Money Frog
Traditionally, the money frog should be placed in a home's energetic center of money. In classical feng shui, this is the southeast corner of your space. And in BTB (or Western) feng shui, it's the top lefthand area of your space as viewed on a floor plan.
In addition to placing a frog in the money area, you can opt for more frogs on an office desk, near where you keep financial papers, or in your entryway on a diagonal from the front door. In this case, it's important to position the frog looking inside the house rather than facing out through the door, so it brings in wealth to you.
A group of money frogs—particularly groups of three, six, or nine—is thought to bring more wealth than a single frog. But don't exceed nine, and arrange them so they face different directions.
Places to Avoid a Money Frog
Always position a feng shui money frog in a respectful way. Keep the frog and the area around it clean, and don't ever place it on the floor. Instead, choose a raised surface, such as a cabinet, that is positioned against a wall for backing support to protect its energy. But don't place the frog up too high either, as this can put it out of reach of the pockets that it should be filling with money.
The money frog also should not be in the middle of a room, under a window, or in a hallway or high-traffic area. In addition, don't place a money frog in a bedroom, kitchen, or bathroom, as it can bring bad luck in these spaces.
